WHAT IS VISION THERAPY?
Vision therapy is similar to physical therapy – the major difference being vision therapy is specific to the eyes. Vision therapy helps to improve visual function because it helps to teach the brain to have more control over the eyes. Patients who complete vision therapy can also experience improved brain skills, such as visual processing.
Our vision therapy service is a non-invasive and drug-free personalized treatment program that helps solve the patient’s problem as soon as possible.
Vision therapy improves, or eliminates conditions such as:
- LAZY EYE
- CROSSED EYE
- WANDERING EYE
- PERCEPTION PROBLEMS
- ADD
- ADHD
- AUTISM
Glasses and surgery cannot usually treat these disorders, but vision therapy can be an effective option that utilizes lenses, 3D activities, prisms, and specialized computer software.
Once visual function is improved, the changes are long-lasting because once they are learned, the brain holds onto that ability.
OUR VISION THERAPY TREATMENT
Our vision therapy treatments are administered by our thoroughly trained therapists under direct supervision of Dr. Seiderman.
Most treatment programs require one or two 90-minute office visits per week accompanied by 15 minutes of home therapy 1-2 times per week. Most vision related problems can be eliminated, or improved, in 12 office visits.
Depending on the specific problem, both children and adults can benefit from vision therapy.
HOW VISION THERAPY HELPS CHILDREN
Children need more than 20/20 eyesight to perform well in school, as a multitude of visual skills are also necessary. 20/20 eyesight allows children to see small print from a distance, but studies show that 70% of a student’s school day involves being focused on tasks at their desk. Children need to be able to maintain clear vision while reading and writing and visual processing are vital for math, handwriting and other written work.
Children who struggle with the basic tasks mentioned above usually do so because of vision related problems that make it difficult for them to sustain attention because of effort required to make their eyes work together.
Visual dysfunctions seriously impact one’s ability to concentrate by shortening their attention span, causing frustration and resulting in poor academic performance, which may be below their true intellectual or scholastic potential. Being told one is “lazy or dumb” lowers one’s self-image and to think “they can’t”, results in anger and frustration.
The success rate can be measured in two ways:
1. Patients will demonstrate improved performance in concentration, learning, hand-eye skills, balance, fine and gross motor skills, improvement with eye strain, and headaches.
2. Improvement is carefully measured at our office by Dr. Seiderman by the use of diagnostic and evaluative tests, which yield objective results before and after treatment.
