Homeschooling can have many benefits, and perhaps the most important one is that it allows children to learn at their own pace. This, however, poses a challenge if a child has an undetected functional vision problem, since his or her progress can be hindered without the parents even realizing it.

Some kids may drag their feet when it comes to doing their homework; or complain about having headaches; it can be attributed to a learning difficulty, symptomatic of a condition that can remain undetected by parents – a functional vision problem.

While most kids would prefer to learn at their own pace, there are cases where individualized learning is hiding a functional vision problem, since by not being in a more confined and structured classroom setting, this challenge for some children does not get exposed.

Functional vision is defined as the harmonious work of our eyes, brain, and the visual pathways to help us interact with our surroundings, involving eye focusing, eye teaming, and eye movement skills, and can affect a child’s ability to learn in many ways when there are difficulties in this area.

For instance:

  • Following lines in a text on a page can be particularly hard, since a kid’s eyes cannot work together to follow the words
  • Processing the meaning of the text can be difficult due to a child being very focused on the actual reading
  • Fatigue and headaches can result from straining a visual system that isn’t working well together, and it can take extended periods of time to complete homework
  • Struggling with all subjects, including math, reading, spelling, and writing

With homeschooling, it can be really challenging to detect and understand what’s going on with your child’s learning ability and pace. Some less obvious vision problems that may be limiting your child’s ability to learn could very well be linked to the way his or her eyes function and how the brain processes visual information.

If your child has a learning disability, has been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, or has a visual dysfunction, make sure he or she starts receiving a proper vision therapy before it gets more difficult to perform and accomplish academic tasks.

When a child undergoes vision therapy, he or she is typically more willing to do the homework, stops complaining about headaches, etc.
