With summer break almost over – many parents and kids are beginning to feel the anxiety for the imminent start of a new school year. Because for some, this means struggles and frustration related to homework and poor academic performance, potentially leading to many psychological, emotional and mental difficulties.

Perhaps you have a child who’s a hard worker in school, but no matter how hard he or she tries, academically, things just keep being a challenge. Perhaps your child is even surrounded by excellent instruction and great resources, and yet none of it seems to make a difference – homework is a nightmare and it takes forever.

Naturally, struggles with doing homework are also reflected in the test scores. Since about 80 percent of what a child learns in school is information that is presented visually, we all know how essential good vision is for children to reach their full academic potential.

However, nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are not the only visual disorders that can make learning more difficult. Functional vision problems are less obvious vision problems that can limit your child’s ability to learn, and are linked to the way the eyes function and how the brain processes visual information.

There’s a reason those disorders are called “the hidden disability”. Even many educators and physicians are unaware of them, let alone parents.

Some of the symptoms that would suggest a child has a learning-related vision problem include:

• Reversing words or letters
• Poor eye-hand coordination, including poor writing
• Omitting or repeating words, or confusing similar words
• Holding head too close to reading material
• Blurred vision or double vision
• Short attention span during visual tasks

It all starts with awareness and seeking solutions. If your child is experiencing any of these symptoms, is suffering from a visual dysfunction or a learning disability, or has been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, consider having a Functional Vision Test conducted. You can also take our Vision Quiz.
